Wow! This is a milestone for Kids on Fire! It is the first time we've EVER done call backs. But it was necessary for this film. I couldn't believe the talent this year. It was impossible for Miriam (casting director) and I to make a decision. So we called a few of our actors and asked if we could gather them together and run the auditions again--only this time in-person and with each other.
We drove around, picked the kids up and met up at a friend's house. They have an unfinished portion in their house that they let us commandeer and we ran through about ten different call backs. The kids were great sports, running through scenes four, five, even six times. We wanted to see (1) how they interacted with other actors, (2) How comfortable they were moving around making good use of space, and (3) if they could adapt their performance based on our suggestions.
I was SO impressed, I can't say it enough. We have an amazing set of kids in our little neck of the woods. After reviewing the footage later that night, we finally made our decisions. We're posting the cast list tomorrow -- stay tuned!
