Wildfire Wednesday

Updated: Mar 10, 2019

I have a riddle for you: What do you call On Fire Friday if it happens on a Wednesday?

Answer: Wildfire Wednesday (Yes, the title gave it away).

We are headed to the theater on Friday to watch Dream Work's "How to Train Your Dragon 3: The Hidden World" and we thought it would be awesome if we went in costume. The only problem, of course, is that the costumes aren't finished. So today we got together for five hours and got so much done.

We gathered at two in the afternoon, said a prayer, and split up. There was a lot to do,

BOOTS - They're vikings. Of course they wear boots. But footwear is a bit out of my realm as a costume designer. Shoes are so important to get right because the actor is in the for hours and hours, running, jumping, rolling through all kinds of weather and terrain. I just wasn't ready to bite something like that off, so we came up with a solution. We will make the fluffy-calf part of the boot and have the kids wear their own pre-broken-in shoes during each shoot.

We discovered an incredibly easy way to make these boots. We've had a couple very good seamstresses in our Kids on Fire Crew in the past (Lacy I'm looking at you), but this time around, we are altering a good deal rather than building from scratch. These boots are actually the sleeves off of wool sweaters and fur coats that we've picked up from thrift and good-will stores. We measure around the actor's calf, cut a piece of elastic their size and sew it into a flap created by the boot. It's easy and looks pretty good.

Using the sleeves was Miriam's idea and using the elastic was Mason's. I love it when everyone puts their head on it. We usually come up with something 100 times better than if it was just me trying to scrape something together.

ARMGUARDS - This is just a sneak-peak because we're having a whole separate post dedicated to the armguards. They deserve it. They were so cool, but the design was simple and easily replicated. I have a feeling we'll be making more for Kids on Fire films down the road.

SHIELDS - We had two shields left over from our first On-Fire Friday that just never got painted so we made sure to paint them today.

Our first was a dark green with a white dragon on top. Nelson (Hockskull) painted the green background, Emeline (Ruff Nut) cut out the dragon design, I traced it and and she, Martha, and Kennedy painted it on with white paint.

The second shield was fiery-orange with a black dragon on the front. It was quite detailed, and Kennedy and Iva took great pains to paint it. It looked amazing after it was finished. Some lucky extra viking will get that one.

SHIRTS, VESTS, DRESSES, & A POUCH - Hockskull and Fishlegs both needed shirts. Little Blondie needed a dress. Hockskull needed a vest and Fishlegs needed a pouch (to keep his dragon cards in). We had quite the team of ladies manning two sewing machines, three seam rippers and a measuring tape.

Little Blondie's dress is made of a woman's size long sleeve shirt with a gorgeous viking pattern down the front that we found at Good-Will. Lena took this project on and by the end of the night, little Blondie was the cutest little viking girl you have ever seen.

Fishleg's pouch is actually made of an old dress-up purse that we've had for a long time. We cut the strap off and used it to make belt loops. The only trouble was that the leather was WAY too thick for any sewing machine so we had to use superglue.

FISHLEG'S DRAGON CARDS - Speaking of Fishleg's pouch. Linda (Little Blondie) and Nelson (Hockskull) worked on painting Fishleg's dragon cards that he'll put in the pouch. We found an old Go-Fish game (ironic) and pulled out all the cards that didn't have matches anymore. Those were painted white and then later, we'll sketch/paint dragons on top with lists of facts and numbers.

Snacks anyone? Everyone brought something snacky to share and Creed and William had fun passing everything out, filling bowls, and getting water. We ate dinner together at the end, just before everyone went home. What a great day! We have Hiccup's boots, Haggi's armguard, and Astrid's hood to finish before Friday.

We are so excited!
