Screen Tests: The First Attempt

Updated: Sep 4, 2018

Okay -- I'm leveling with you here.

Any of you who have read the script know that this is a really ambitious project. Half of our scenes require green screen and three fourths require animated CGI dragons: dragons that fly, dragons that knock people over, dragons that are chained up, dragons that dive into the water, dragons with personalities.

I'm still not exactly sure how to do half of my scenes, which means it we means we need to run a million tests before we actually get an actor on the floor.

Today we strung up some green screen outside (love all that that natural light!) and performed two very basic tests. Can we make someone look like they're falling (pictured above) and can we make someone look like they're riding a dragon (pictured below)?

The first test Miriam actually did fall (the bin was empty and the ground wasn't level) so we'll have to redo that test : ) but the second test was a success. YES! Have a look . . .

Some other things that we have to test . . .

  • Can we make it look like it's raining?

  • Can we make it look like someone is falling off the dragon?

  • Can we make it look like a field or an arena is burning around the actors?

  • Can we make a character throw something and have it lodge in the dragon's leg?

  • Can we make a character dodge round a dragon's legs?

  • . . . and about a million other things

But we'll figure it out. I love a challenge. I think moving making will get boring for me once I've figured it all out. Until then, it's just a big puzzle.

"The sun is in my eyes Astrid!"
