One thing that we try REALLY hard to do is cast people based on potential rather than perfection. I don't believe in the "natural:" The natural born actor or the natural born athlete or the natural born scholar. There aren't naturals, there are only the well-rehearsed. Some of our cast members have been acting since they were toddlers ("Watch Mommy, I'm a bird!") and some of our cast members have never acted before. And so we Rehearse.
Miriam (Astrid) teaches a drama class every Tuesday, attended by our core cast and extras. They've been learning about voice, expressions, body language, etc. They've been reading from the script, creating skits, and becoming comfortable with the camera.
Here's our set of lost-boys-turned-viking-warriors. I wish, wish, WISH that there were more parts for little boys in this film because so many of them are eager to act again. 10 points if you can you find Tuff-Nut and Hockskull in the group!
And here is a good chunk of our core cast. Left to right: Carter (Fishlegs), Rachel T. (Haggi), Mason (Hiccup), Emiline (Ruff-Nut), and Miriam (Astrid). They are already a blast to work with and we have't even started. Oh man, do I want to begin filming or what!
Gotta keep working on those costumes.
