Newspaper Food

Gone fishing. Will be back in time for Friday's Feast.

So--the feast scene is only two days away and I need some entrees. Not edible entrees, just some visible entrees. So I decided to paper mache up some fish and a suckling pig.

First thing first, I cut out a basic fish shape out of cardboard (actually four basic fish shapes) and then used crumpled up newspaper and plastic grocery bags (my personal favorite) to give it three dimensions. I worked from the head to the tail, adding bulk and body and taping as I went.

For the pig, I didn't cut a cardboard shape. I just crumpled up large wads of newspaper and rolled those in more newspaper until I had the shapes I needed for the body, head, snout, and four legs. The I taped them together and I was ready for the hard part.

I mixed up a solution of 1 cup water to 1 cup school glue and it worked like a charm. I just dipped the strips of newspaper in the solution and layered my fish with them. My arms and nails and that whole counter were caked with the stuff by the end. I paper mached the fish and Miriam (Astrid) rescued me and paper mached the pig. Thank you Miriam!

Paper mache is just a bit messy for it to become a hobby.

And then they sat and dried for two days. It wasn't until the MORNING OF that I got up early and painted the fish. The pig wasn't dry until an hour before filming--eek! But William got in there and got it painted in time.

Thanks William! It looks great!

We painted the pick a roasted orange color without any gradient because we were trying to hurry, but we painted the fish darker on top with a gray/white belly. I even took a toothbrush and speckled it with some watered tan and charcoal spots.

And there they are, ready to be sliced and served!
