Mighty Hammer of Thor!

Well, Stoic needed a weapon. He's not the sword kind of guy--more impulsive, less disciplined--and he's definitely not the bow kind of guy. Aiming takes way too much time. Maybe an axe: an axe requires strength and evokes an image of power . . . but a hammer? Now that's Stoic's kind of weapon.

Matthew (Stoic) decided to built a stoic-worthy hammer. He took a long skinny board, shaved down the corners and sides to make it into a handle, then built a box around one end. That box was then covered in thick EVA foam and contact cement. The corners were shaved off, the handle was sanded, and then he and I spacked the whole thing in white plaster to fill in the gaps or cracks.

And . . . turns out Hockskull needed a weapon too so we made him a smaller version of Stoic's hammer because Hockskull is a bit like the chief, blustery, blunt, hard-headed and impulsive. He's basically a little chief in his circle of friends.

Then I took it out and spray painted the hammers metallic gray. The idea is that the vikings made them of metal or stone, so the paint covers the fact that we made them out of wood and EVA foam.

After the base coat dried, I took it into the shop and applied the silver buff. I just sprayed metallic silver onto a rag and scrubbed the paint onto the hammers. It gave it a organic metal/stone look which made it look a lot more realistic.

Someone looks way to pleased with herself : )

And now they belong to our vikings. It was fun to see Hockskull carrying his around authoritatively. Matthew has a bit of trouble carrying his around because it's pretty heavy. But I'm exsctied to feature them in some scenes coming up.
