Hockskull's Helmet

Updated: Oct 28, 2018

Want to see our most recent prop? William and I have been working on Hockskull's Viking helmet. He's our little brazen warrior so his helmet needed to be cool in an over-the-top kind of way. We decided to attach ram horns instead of the regular tusk-looking horns that the Vikings usually sported.

We used a pattern created by Lost Wax. The base hat is made out of 1/2 inch EVA foam and contact cement and the top, sides, and rim were made of 2mm EVA foam. The rivets were made of googly eyes and you can actually hear them rattle around when you shake the thing. It's kind of funny. If Hockskull runs by camera in any of our scenes, make sure and listen for the  maraca.

Painting it was simple. We did a base coat of black acrylic paint followed by a layer of chrome spray paint. Then, to give it the metal look, I sprayed a rag with and then I sprayed rag with silver and rubbed the silver on kind of messily. The horns were just acrylic paint followed by a layer of modge-podge.

And there he is. What a cutie! I can't want to see him decked out with a hammer in his hand. I've got to make about ten more of these hats: two for the twins, one for Fishlegs and a bunch for our extra vikings. Better get to work!
