Building the Rooftop

First Day of shooting is nearly upon us!

We are filming two scenes our first day, one of them is the scene where Hiccup climbs up onto his roof at night, shoots the Night Fury with his bola launcher, and falls off. That means we need a roof high enough to climb onto, stable enough to stand on, and low enough to fall off. Hmm . . .

Matthew accepted the challenge. And aren't we glad he did!

Kids on Fire has so many talented people and Matthew is definitely one of them. Give him a drill and he'll give you a roof. Give him a sketch and he'll give you a CGI dragon, Give him a costume and he'll give you the character you've had in your head.

He designed and built the whole thing in a single day with a small amount of help from us and Mason when he needed the thing lifted or flipped. He set a camera and time-lapsed the whole thing too (keep an eye out for it in the behind the scenes video).

At first, the roof was over ten feet tall at the peak. Yeah. Crazy tall! I could just imagine Mason falling off of that and breaking an arm or getting a concussion. So Matthew cut it down once and then again the morning of shooting. In the end it was six feet tall at the peak. That made it safer AND (we realized) easier to film. If we had left it high, all the shots would have been low angle.

One project down. It means we're that much closer to filming. It's crazy! Crazy exciting!
