Are you ready for this? We spent three hours at the lake and I think I got three times as much BTS footage as I did regular footage. I think maybe we had too much fun : )
One of the shots we needed was Hiccup and Astrid falling off the dragon into the water. We took the ladder along so they could jump off of it, but Mason realized, "Wait a minute. If I walk out to the ladder after it's all set up, I'll be wet before I jump. That can't be."
So what did he do?
He literally hopped the ladder all the way out into the chest-high water. In the end, only his boots were set and because they were already a dark color, it was impossible to tell. Wow! That's dedication if I ever saw it.
Miriam waded out to the ladder, but Someone (we're not naming names : ) adjusted the ladder while she was standing on it and she fell off. Thankfully she didn't get completely wet. It was the first of many outtakes.
I covered a piece of insulation foam with our green screen cloth to create out green screen board. I wanted it to float, but I didn't realize how well it would float. William stood behind the actors with it upright for a few of the shots, But for most of shots he used it as a boogie-board and floated behind the camera.
Faster Mason! Faster!
Easter Egg! You'll notice in these shots that neither Mason or Miriam are wearing their arm guards. They fall off the dragon with arm guards and land into the water without them. They also aren't wearing boots, but that's harder to see. Actually, Hiccup wore his for the first shot (the jump), but they were so heavy and water-logged that he took them off and was barefoot the rest of the time.
The hardest shot was where Astrid and Hiccup both come up out of the water. Timing it and getting into position each time was tough. Not to mention Miriam was supposed to look like she was drowning and both Mason and I were never sure if she was acting or really having a hard time.
But as you can see by the pictures, we all had fun. It was a great day.
