What a day! There was so much BTS footage gathered from this shoot. Want to see?
Rehearsing the lines and blocking the scene beforehand.
For this scene Hiccup had to fall AGAIN! That's five scenes now where he's had to fall repeatedly (1) Off the roof, (2) Pushed by Astrid, (3) Into the water, (4) On the Flightmare's Island, and now (5) Pushed by Stoic. Next time I write a script I'm going to be way more careful. I didn't even think about it.
But (I think) this was the last fall. I really, really, really, hope it is.
Our master of improv.
Matthew (Stoic) kept us laughing through this very serious, sad scene. I learned to keep the camera rolling so i could catch his one-liners and after-the-fact dialogue.
TOP LEFT: I'm Gandalf the Green, come to reckon with fate!!
TOP RIGHT: Son, let me teach you the finer points of playing with blocks.
BOTTOM LEFT: Be nice to the hat.
BOTTOM RIGHT: Lets have a heart-to-heart in your jail cell.
My favorite outtake of all was when Hiccup challenged Stoic to a duel and they fought to the death with kindling. As you can see, Hiccup didn't win that fight.
Oh, and the smoke! We had six smoke bombs and for two of the shots, the smoke was sent directly through the windows into the prison. The room filled up fast and Mason (Hiccup) was standing right in the cloud until I shouted "Cut!" and then he and I (who didn't have it nearly as bad) would burst out the door into the fresh air.
After it dissipated some, Creed (Gobber) and Carter (Fishlegs) would stand in the cloud and fan the rest out to prepare for the next scene. Thanks you two! I don't even remember asking you to do that. You just saw a need and filled it! Can I say it again? I have the best cast and the best crew on this planet.
The light is fading! Quick get the shot. Here you get a quick glimpse of our fire light. It's just a flicker bulb attached to my bedside lamp without the shade. It worked wonders for us, especially as it grew darker.
What a fun day/night. Thank you to my cast who stayed up late and kept going through smoke and sleepiness. Thank you so much to my crew who came and helped even though it wasn't their scene. And a big thank you to all the parents and older siblings who drove to and from tonight. You are always so positive and happy. I can't believe I get to work with such amazing people
